Yandex 2020 Algorithm Update Summary

2020 has been a turbulent year in terms of algorithm updates, clouded in Yandex making ongoing changes to search results pages to accommodate the large number of additional users transitioning their offline activities online due to the Corona pandemic.

How do we monitor Yandex’s algorithm?

We use a combination of third-party monitoring tools, and our own keyword datasets across a number of sectors, and regions, within Yandex. From this we can ascertain a volatility score – similar to the SERP volatility trackers that are used for Google.

March to July 2020 saw a lot of SERP volatility and fluctuations as the world adapted to the Covid pandemic, stay at home orders, and restrictions. Because of this, rather than writing an article every day to say the SERPs were volatile, I’ve left it til this post – as it wasn’t just Yandex and Russia going through a period of intense turbulence.
