Yandex Food Fined 60k Rubles (US$773) For Leaking User Data

The World Court in Moscow fined the Yandex Food service 60,000 rubles for leaking user data to the Internet. The court session in the case took place on April 21, it considered the protocol drawn up by Roskomnadzor.

Recall that on March 1, Yandex Food reported a leak of user data. As a result of the unfair actions of one of the employees, the phone numbers of the service’s customers and information about their orders were published on the Internet.

On March 22, the network published an interactive map with a database about Yandex Food customers, which was blocked by Roskomnadzor the very next day. On March 23, Network Freedoms and Roskomsvoboda began preparing a class action lawsuit against Eda. They propose to recover from the defendants jointly and severally compensation for non-pecuniary damage in the amount of 100 thousand rubles in favor of each of the plaintiffs. About 8 thousand users announced their intention to join the lawsuit.

Yandex are taking all measures to ensure that this does not happen again.

The company will connect Yandex Food to a data management tool that was launched last year. With its help, each user can see what data various Yandex services have accumulated about him, and, if desired, delete them once and for all.
